MOT’s was introduced in the 1960’s. Over recent years, there has been major developments in vehicle technology. With vehicles being fitted with lane-assisted driving to make the roads safer.

With the increase in Hybrid and Electric Vehicles, DVSA said that, this has also had an impact on the road safety.

January this year (2023), the DVSA launched public consultation, on the future of MOT‘s in the UK.

What is the proposal changes?

The Governments 2035 Ban

The DVSA, is thinking about updating MOT testing for cars, motorbikes and vans. This is to ensure roadworthiness and that checks continue to balance the costs on motorists.

They are doing this to ensure that, road safety is still in place and keeping up to speed with advances in vehicle technology. And of course, tackling vehicle emissions.

First Proposal

One of the proposals, is to ensure MOTs remain fit for the future. Along with changing the date, at which the first MOT Tests to place for new light vehicles. With the average cost of an MOT being £40, this could save motorists across UK around, £100 million a year in MOT fees.

It is a well known fact that, most new vehicles pass their MOT’s at 3 years. However, the proposal is to change it to 4 years. This is due to the low amount of car casualties, in car accidents.

The Government’s analysis shows, that the change from 3 to 4 years for the first MOT, shouldn’t have an impact on road safety.

Many European countries like; Belgium, Denmark, France, Italy, Spain, and Portugal, undertake roadworthiness testing 4 years, from the vehicle’s registration.

Second Proposal

Another proposal, is to put in new measures, including introducing testing of pollutants such as, particulate number (PN) and NOx. This is to ensure that Diesel, Petrol and Hybrid Vehicles, always meet emissions requirements throughout their lifespan.

The reason for this proposal, is to continue on monitoring the emissions, to tackle the pollution problem. They are also looking at the frequency of the MOT’s.

Furthermore, they are also considering, if EV batteries should be tested to improve the safety and reliability of them.

The plan for zero emission by 2035

No Pollution Sign

The Governments plan, is to have a full re-view by 2025, and that all the Governments vehicles are to be 100% zero emissions, by 2027.

Furthermore, the sales of new petrol and diesel vehicles are to be phased out by 2030.

The Government plans are to install, at least 2,500 high powered charging points across the UK road network. And that all the new vehicles, are to have zero emissions from, 2030 to 2035. The idea is that by 2035, all new vehicles will be 100% zero emissions.

Petrol, Diesel and Hybrid’s after 2030?

The Governments plan, is to also ban Hybrid Vehicles, from 2035.

The new Hybrid Vehicles that drive a significant distance, with no carbon coming out of the tailpipe, will be allowed to continue being on sale, until 2035.

Even though the Governments plan, is to ban these vehicles, they will still be allowed to drive them on the UK roads. However, they have said that, there will be certain changes and charges in place for doing so.

Only plug-in and Full Hybrid Vehicles, will be allowed to be on sale, from 2030 until 2035.

It has been said that, by 2040 the only vehicles, that will be sold, will be EV’s. However, half of the vehicles on the roads, will still be powered by fossil fuels.

Conclusion

Hybrid and Electric Vehicles are still new to most vehicle owners and manufacturers. However, the technology is expected to pick up and increasingly grow, following the gradual advancements in the locomotive industry.

Electrical vehicles, are also expected to curb the environmental effects, caused by internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles. This is by reducing the carbon footprint. They also offer, both businesses and consumers an intelligent alternative for a cleaner environment.

Therefore, while only a few businesses or families own EV’s, it is good time for people to think about switching to Hybrid Vehicles, for a cleaner and greener world.
