MOT Testers in the UK have seen a significant increase in demand over the last few years.

Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, British motorists were given a six-month extension to their MOT, which expired between March 30 and July 31, 2020.

This resulted in a tremendous rise in demand for MOT testers to clear this backlog.

The number of MOT Testers in the UK has increased since 2020, but there is still a shortage of MOT Testers.

In the UK, MOT Testers are responsible for inspecting vehicles to make sure they meet road safety and environmental standards.

As Electric Vehicles become more popular, it is important that there are enough MOT Testers available to meet the demand.

If you are looking for a career in MOT Testing, now is a great time to get involved!

Why is there a demand for MOT Testers?

The number of drivers applying for their annual MOT tests in England and Wales has decreased by more than 10% since the pandemic.

The demand for monthly MOT inspections throughout April and May dropped by around 2 – 2.5 million each month since the epidemic.

As MOTs are only necessary once a vehicle is three years old, yearly demand for them during these months will only increase by the amount of new vehicles produced in April and May three years prior.

In April and May, for example, registrations reached only 185,000 and 215,000 vehicles each month on average, implying that it will take many years to return to previous levels.

It has been said that in 2020 there were just 25,000 cars registered in total across the two months which is by far lower than pre-pandemic levels.

So we expect virtually no change in MOT demand from 2022 to 2023 when these vehicles are due their first MOT.

The IMI has also raised concerns about an electric vehicle (EV) skills gap, with insufficient technicians to service the large quantity of zero-emissions vehicles expected on UK roads by 2030.

Become an MOT Tester

Becoming an MOT tester is simpler than you would believe.

There are several training options to select from.

However, you must first understand what it takes before selecting the best training course for you.

You must have a full UK drivers license of the sort of vehicle you wish to test for the class of tests in order to be an MOT tester.

You also have to have at least four years full time working experience in the service and repair of the vehicles you want to test, as well as a level 3 qualification.

Moreover, you need to ensure that you have no unspent criminal conviction of violence, intimidation or convictions in the MOT testing scheme, Motor Trade, and be of a good repute.
